Telemedicine: What is it?

Telemedicine (Telehealth) is the use of electronic communication technologies in order to provide clinical health care at a distance. It allows a patient to partake in a medical visit without being physically present at the doctor’s office.

Telemedicine allows you to see your doctor from the convenience of your home, work, or from anywhere there is internet. 

It is great for prescription refills, reviewing lab and imaging results, physician counselling and consult requests. It is NOT meant for emergency visits.

Appropriate Uses

Some examples of appropriate use include:
  • Medication refills
  • Reviewing labs and imaging (CT/MRI) results
  • Referral to specialists and other providers
  • General health concerns
  • Smoking cessation

Inappropriate Uses

The following visits WILL NOT qualify for Telehealth services: 
  • Emergency Visits
  • Prescription for narcotics (Percocet, Morphine, Oxycodone, Oxycontin, Fentanyl, etc)
  • Prescription for benzodiazepines (Ativan, Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, Clonazepam, etc)
  • Prescription for ADD/ADHD (Ritalin, Methylphenidate)
  • Assessments that requires a physical examination within the doctor’s office
